hi

Hi everybody!
I'm back to blogging after a really long time. Feels nice to have finished my course but in a way I really miss my department of LIS very very much. Those classes, seminars, assignments, and all those fun we had are only a rememberance now. Feels as if I were to be still in the dept. Still life's going on cool.

Just to say Hai!

Hai! everybody.
Today I simply thought of blogging. Well, there is nothing special as such. O.K. let me tell something about the Freshers' Party that we had last week for our juniors. Though it started late, it persisted all the taste, sweetness and joy all through the day. Only thing was that some of our teachers were absent. It was nice to see all our juniors welldressed and happy to be part of this dept.
O.K. friends bye all of u.

Blogging after a long time

Hello! everybody.
This is me blogging after a long long time. But still i've got many things to say. One is my marriage which was on May 19th and another is myself being the topper in II semester. Both are overwhelming to me and am very happy. Hence am very busy these days trying many recipes at home to please my hubby and also to keep up my 1st place in the department! Not really. I think both are false. Anyways I end my blog with a hope of blogging soon again.

SEMINAR ON CRANFIELD TESTS

CRANFIELD TESTS

Introduction:

Evaluation experiments are those which are conducted to test the performance of the information retrieval systems. Quite a number of retrieval studies have been conducted during recent decades. Lancaster mentions that probably the first evaluation study in information retrieval was conducted in 1953. The first significant studies were the Cranfield tests, which brought a new dimension to research in retrieval system evaluation.

CRANFIELD 1:

The first evaluation of IRS was undertaken at Cranfield, U.K., under the guidance of C.W. Cleverdon in 1957 and is known as Cranfield test 1.

Objectives:

The project was designed to compare the effectiveness of four indexing systems:
1. an alphabetical subject catalog based on a subject heading list.
2. a UDC classifed catalog with alphabetical chain index.
3. a catalog based on a faceted classification and an alphabetical index.
4. a catalog with uniterm coordinate index.

System parameters:

The study involved 100 documents half of which were research reports and half periodical articles, were chosen equally from the general field of aeronautics and specialised field of aerodynamics.
Three indexers were chosen - one with subject knowledge, one with indexing experience, and one straight from library school having neither of both. Each indexer was asked to index each source five times sprnding 2, 4, 6, 12, and 16 minutes per document. One hundred documents thus generated 6000 indexed items (100 docs * 3 indexers * 4 systems * 5 times ). Each of these 6000 items was tested in 3 phases and therefore the system worked on altogether 18000 indexed items. The test was carried to find out whether the level of performance increased with the increasing experience of the system personnel.
The project used manufactured queries formulated by the members out of the project before the actual search. Each document was studied by them and 400 relevant queries were generated.

Results:

1 All four systems operated with an overall average recall ratio of 80%.
NOTE: Recall ratio = (Hits/Number of documents on the system) * 100 %

2 The recall ratios of different systems were as follows:
uniterm: 82%
alphabetical index: 81.5%
UDC: 76%
faceted classification: 74%

3 Increased time in indexing increased the recall.

4 No significant difference was found in the performance of the threee different indexers.

Failures:

Question faiures 17%
Indexing failures 60%
Searching failures 17%
System failures 6%

Significance:

The test proved that the performance of a system does not depend on the indexing experience or the subject background of the indexer. And it developed for the first time the methodologies that could successfilly be applied to evaluate the IRS.

CRANFIELD TEST 2

The second Cranfield test was a controlled experiment that attempted to assess the effects of the index languages on the retrieval systems. This study was performed by varying each factor, while keeping the others constant. The various index languages were formed by dividing the concepts into phrases, showing hierarchy with superordinate, subordinate, and collateral classes, adding broader and narrower terms to the original terms, combining synonyms and quasi synonyms with the original indexing terms etc.

Results:

1 in the case where concepts were used for indexing, the system performance worsened with the introduction of superordinate, subordinate and collateral classes along with the original concepts.

2 in the case of single terms, the inclusion of the quasi synonyms worsened the performance.

3 when broader and narrower terms were included along with the controlled languages of the thesaurus, the performance worsened.

4 index languages formed out of titles performed better than those formed out of abstracts.

Conclusion:

However, the Cranfiend tests have their own significance in the evaluation retrieval studies. The major determinant factors of performance viz., recall, precision, fallout, inverse relationship between recall and precision, etc were determined through these tests.

Comparison of simple retrieval process model with google

Comparison of simple retrieval process with google:
In this model the text objects can be compared with number of websites. Google indexes these websites which contains information and these can be compared with the indexed objects in the model. When the users need any information, according to their information need they put a query to the google. Then google compares the query with the indexed objects and retrieves some objects and this can be compared with the retrieved objects. If the retrieved objects are relevant to the user’s information need then the process stops. If it is not relevant then the users may change the way of query or the information need itself.

SEMINAR

Seminar on

CANON OF PERMANENCE

The word 'canon' means a body of principles, rules or standards. And 'Permanence' means intended to last for a long time or forever. Here, canons are useful for designing a scheme of classification. Ranganathan explains the canon of permanence as that the facets used in a classification system should continued to be used as long as there is no change in the purpose of the system.

And the canon states that, "A characteristic used as the basis for the classificatoin of a universe should continue to be unchanged so long as there is no change in the purpose of classification."

Ranganathan also states some examples:

1. Imagine the result of using colour as a charecteristic for classifying chameleons. This suggests that permanence equates not to use the same facets, but to use facets that reflect permanent qualities of the entities in question. A similar example would be to classify the politicians as to their political complexion, which keeps on changinig.

2. In some schemes for classification, periodicals are divided into two classes:
(a) Those published by learned societies, and
(b) Those not published by learned societies.
This has lead to a little difficulty in libraries; that in Classified Catalogue code, periodicals undergo frequent changes in the authority or agency publishing them.

3. The periodical Medical Library, which had been running its course from 1883 without a learned "Godfather" was taken in 1890 as its official organ by the American Electro-therapeutic Association which was just then founded. In 1926, it took as a joint foster father the International Association of Climatologists.

3. The Journal of Indian Botany was launched as a private concern in Madras in September 1919. It was the property of a private individual, Mr TRD Bell, then chief conservator of forests, Bombay. In 1920, the Indian Botanical Society came into existence, and at a meeting held on 3rd Febraury 1922, it decided to takeover the Journal as the property and official organ of that learned body.

4. The dalmatian dog will always be a dalmatian, thus the facet "Breed" represents a permanent charecteristic of dogs, although it could be argued that the types of available types of dog breeds can change. It is perhaps this latter quality that is more important in this canon.

THE END OR THE BEGINNING

There is a saying, "Ending of one thing is the beginning of the other". So, we come to the end of the blogging competition. That doesn't mean end of blogging at all.

Till now, personal diaries were meant to be kept secretly, written in a room where there is noone else, and read by none other than the author himself. But blogs are made just as the opposite of this. The idea of blogging itself is so fantastic that it welcomes anybody's ideas, thoughts, experiences and sharing of information, knowledge and much more things.

I personally enjoyed this competition very very much. I not only got an opportunity to share my ideas but also to know others' views and opinions. I think this is how the world becomes smaller and brings people closer to one another.

I have a great satisfaction of participating in this competition by following each and every rule. I've not missed blogging even a single day. I've a hope of winning a prize also, as I've put in myself into this blogging with great enthusiasm and sincierity. Hari sir, please note this - If you want me to participate in the future competitions with the same spirit, you've to see to that I get a prize. You consider this as a blackmail or whitemail or email !!!
Got scared, sir? I was just kidding. And I just feel that participation and learning is more important than winning a prize.

Anyways, I thank Hari sir for presenting me the BEST FRIEND called BLOG which I can accompany with me always.

And judges, please re-read all my blogs as you may have the chances of missing some. I'm sure U find them all interesting. Am I boasting too much? What to do, campaigning and advertising are very necessary these days.

Friends, continue blogging hereafter. All the best for your exams. (Read my previous blog to get some tips of how to achieve success).
I shall end my today's blog with three quotes:

"Each work has to pass through three stages - Ridicule, Opposition and then Acceptance"------Swami Vivekananda

"Never take a step backward, not even to gain momentum"------Andy Garcia

"Life without criticism is unworthy"-------Socrates

BYE!!!! LOVE U ALL

SUCCESS

Secret of success is constancy of purpose. People who are good at thinking usually achieve more than those who rely on physical strength. Clear thinking is the key to success. Like most worth - while attainments, thinking wisely is not possible without preparation and effort.
