FORENSIC SCIENCE

Forensic science is the scientific study or investigation of a crime such as murder, by scientifically trained specialists - doctors, dentists, chemists and biologists.

At the scene of the crime: Eqipment such as cameras, lasers and materials forcarts make a record of the position of everything at the scene. Samples of hair, paint glass and other substances are also taken away for analysis. These samples have to be handled carefully. The investigating team wears paper, body unit, overshoes and gloves so that they do not contaminate the samples. They will also wrap and seal the samples in plastic before sending them for analysis.

ANALYSING CLUES:

Fingerprints can reveal the identity of a criminal, if they can be matched to samples kept on a computer network. Analysis of DNA (Genetic code i.e., De-oxyribo Nucleic Acid) from blood and other samples taken from the scene of the crime has been used since 1986. Each person is unique. DNA fingerprint or profile which can be checked against samples taken at the crime scene laboratory analysis of a single of a fleck of paint is enough to identify a car used. In a car, for example, bite marks in food found in the scene car lead to arrest, if they can be matched with dental records.

CAUSES OF DEATH

Suspicious deaths iinvolving accidents, murder or suicide are usually investigated by a coroner cum official who specialises in foensic science). The coroner will order in antopry. The forensic pathologist examines the appearance of the body, and then dissects it looking at each organ in turn. He or she also analyses blood and flesh samples.
